Beverley Braves U12s Tame Lions With Convincing Win

under 12s secured their third league win of the season with a 50 points to 10 victory over a game Lambwath Lions side at a very sunny Archbishop Sentamu Academy.

Playing on what is probably the best pitch in the league it took the Braves five minutes to get on the scoreboard. After good work from Ryan Deane, standing in at scrum- half due to injury, powered his way over for his first try for Beverley this season. Rowbotham obviously got the taste for scoring after this, gaining possession with a one on one steal to score under the posts just three minutes later.

At 10-0, the Braves were dominating the game, and it looked like Matthew Brown had scored in just his fourth game, but the prop was held up over the line. Beverley continued to move forward and a strong run followed by a fine offload from Oliver Loney put Rowbotham into the space for his third try, soon to be four just a few minutes later, again after good build up work from Deane.

At 18-0 the Braves were cruising and a Marcus Walker cross field kick created an opportunity for Thomas Cohen to touch down only for the play to be pulled back due to an earlier knock on. Walker then picked up the ball from scruffy play, dummied to his right, which opened the gap for him to race into the right-hand corner and score. 22nil at half-time.

The half-time break allowed the Braves some time to rearrange their side and bring on some fresh legs in the hot sun. It also allowed Oliver Gresswell some time on the Braves side after sportingly volunteering to play for the Lions to make them up to 13 in the first half. Once again, he let no one down with a strong defensive display.

Brown, after another solid run out in the first period, swapped shirts to play for Lambwath in the second half.

Lambwath started the second half the stronger and made their possession pay with a try from a strong run on the left to make it 4-22. This was only a short period of Lambwath being on top as the Braves took the game to them again with strong defence from Joseph Dennis (who later had to come off after a knock to the head) and Loney.

This led to winning possession in a good position and Walker timed his pass to perfection to put Wallis in space straight from a scrum. Wallis does not miss these opportunities, and he was soon dotting the ball down under the posts for the busy hooker to convert. Minutes later and the same combination saw Wallis race away this time for Walker to convert.

George Bennett-Teare drove the ball up as well as ever but saw his opportunity to score by racing down the left hand wing to score in the corner. 38-4 was soon to be 42-4 as Henry Hughes crabbed his way diagonally across the field, beating around seven or eight would be tacklers to score next to the posts. Walker converted.

Ewan Morton had a quiet game at full-back, but did everything that was required of him when he was called upon, and the same can be said of wings Tom and Harry Newton, Tom putting in a couple of strong runs when he did see the ball, and prop Matthew Hutchinson.

The Braves rounded off the scoring with that combination on the left-hand side Walker putting Wallis through the gap again as he scored under the posts goaled by William Kirkup brought up the 50.

Credit though to Lambwath who battled to the end scoring a converted try on the final whistle to finish 10-50.

Braves man of the match, Ethan Rowbotham.
