Trust Supports Innovative Sports Project For Young People in Beverley

Boxing Club In Beverley

The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire Mrs Gail Mettyear, Chairman of the Tribune Trust Hugh Bethell DL and Trust Director Paul Cheeseman will visit ‘’ in   where they will present them a £2,000 to help support an innovative sports and boxing club for young people.

The Swinemoor Estate, Beverley has traditionally faced difficulties with facilities for young people. As a consequence of reduced spending the Burden Rd Centre has spare capacity and two members of the local community with a passion for , particularly boxing, have established ‘Track Fitness and Boxing Club’ at the centre.

They used their own money to purchase a boxing ring, gloves, head protectors, punch bags and other equipment. With the support of local parents over 100 young people are now using the centre for a variety of indoor and outdoor sport activity. Whilst boxing is the main sport, general fitness and training is the overall theme in addition to the social networking.

Track Fitness has proved a huge success since opening its doors in January and has led to a marked reduction in reports of crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. It has strong support from the police and from the ward councillor. Consequently more equipment is required and the club has made an application to the Tribune Trust to secure its immediate future and growth through a grant of £2,000 which has been approved.

Commenting on the decision Trust Director Paul Cheeseman said;

“The Trustees were unanimous in their approval of this grant and in making it recognised what a significant difference sport can make to the lives of young people.”

“The enthusiasm of those who founded and run the club and the young people who attend is amazing. The centre now literally buzzes with children, young people, parents, noise, sweat and activity. Such excitement and self-esteem is a testimony to them and the Trustees wish them continued success and are delighted to support them.”
