Good News For Cyclists As Work On Cycle Lane Begins

A brand new £607,000 off-road cycle lane along side A1035, between Tickton and White Cross Roundabout, has officially opened to the public.

Constructed by -based contractor PBS Construction, under the YORcivil framework, the scheme was fully-funded by the (DfT) after the council’s transport policy team secured £607,000 through a successful bid to the DfT’s Cycle Safety Fund, administered by sustainable transport charity Sustrans.

There have been three cyclists killed or seriously injured along this route in the past three years. Following finishing of the off-road cycle lane along Swinemoor Lane by the council later this year, there will be a continuous and safe off-road cycle route between Hull, Dunswell, Woodmansey, , Tickton and Leven .

Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning, said:

“The completion of this scheme is excellent news and is an example of this authority’s commitment to securing funding wherever possible to invest and improve the infrastructure of the East Riding.”

“The A1035 carries approximately 17,000 vehicles a day, including 800 HGVs, and is the main route into Beverley from the east, providing access from the towns and villages in northern Holderness.”

“The new cycle lane will help improve safety for cyclists and help promote cycling as both an alternative and sustainable mode of transport and also encourage more of our residents to take up cycling as a healthy form of exercise.”

“It is really pleasing that this scheme has been undertaken by a local contractor, boosting the local economy and safeguarding local jobs.”

“I want to thank our residents, motorists and the travelling public for their patience and understanding whilst the new cycle path was constructed, with all groups to benefit from its completion.”

Rupert Douglas, Sustrans area manager for North and East Yorkshire and the Humber, said:

“It’s great to see quality infrastructure being built that will really allow people to choose to cycle short distances between Beverley and the villages and holiday parks that the new route links.”

“It’s also a major step forward in creating a new section of National Cycle Network from Beverley on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds to Hornsea on the coast, which will also encourage more sustainable leisure and tourism journeys by locals and visitors alike.”
