The rate in the East Riding rose in February to 58 per cent mostly due to last year’s roll out of the fortnightly bin collections.

The rate has risen as more glass, plastics and paper are saved from landfill due to the blue recycling bins being emptied fortnightly instead of four-weekly. Waste collected in green bins and sent to landfill in February dropped by 684 tonnes compared with the same month last year.

Up to 130,000 households are now on fortnightly bin collections following the roll out last year by following pressure from residents. A further 20,000 in the Goole area will be on fortnightly collections from June.

Councillor , the council’s portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “Februarys tend to be quiet months for recycling so to achieve 58 per cent is staggering.

“Residents told us nearly two years ago that they wanted fortnightly collections and bigger blue bins to be able to recycle more. They are being proved right month after month.”

An extra 562 tonnes was collected from the blue bins in February compared with what was put in the blue bins in February last year. In total, 2,344 tonnes of glass, paper, cans and plastics was sent for recycling.

As expected during winter months, the amount of waste in the brown compost bins was well down on what is collected in the summer months. In February the sodden ground and endless rain meant there was 80 tonnes less compared with what was taken from the brown bins in February last year.

The roll out in Goole starts in June following the completion of the £2m transfer loading station in Lidice Road for the domestic waste collected in the Goole area before it is forwarded on to recycling companies.
