A Beverley based training company has given students a unique insight into careers in the logistics sector.

TIR Training invited pupils from The Market Weighton School and School and Language College to take part in the “Logistics Challenge” as part of .

The year 11 students experienced what it’s like to drive a HGV in a range of weather conditions using the company’s state-of-the-art driver simulator. They also saw a fork lift truck demonstration and had the opportunity to drive a fork lift truck themselves.

Karen Arundel, Employer Engagement and Partnerships Manager at TIR, said: “The aim of the event was to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week and raise awareness among young people of the career opportunities in the logistics industry.

“This was a unique opportunity for the students to try out the simulator, which none of them had done before.

“It gave them a great insight into the type of they could have access to as part of their training if they choose a career in logistics.

“The simulator offers a very realistic experience of driving a large HGV in a range of different conditions, from clear days to snow and ice. The students really enjoyed getting behind the wheel.”

Georgia Simpkins, 15, from The Market Weighton School, said she was interested in an Apprenticeship in Business and Administration or Marketing after completing her GCSEs.

She said: “I didn’t realise how big the industry is but this event has opened my eyes.”

Brett, 16, from Hornsea School and Language College, said: “The simulator and fork lift truck were really good. I now realise the logistics industry is much bigger than I first thought.”

Shah Wright, TIR Associate Director of Operations and Sales, gave the students an introduction to the company.

Steve Robson, Transport Manager for Howdens Joinery which has several depots in the Hull and the East Riding, gave a presentation about the logistics sector and the importance of Apprenticeships to the industry.

Mr Robson said: “The students enjoyed the event and it was excellent for them to see the benefits of Apprenticeships.”

National Apprenticeship Week ran from March 3 to 7th.

Apprentices earn while they learn and gain a real qualification as well as valuable workplace skills and experience. By hiring an Apprentice, businesses can grow their own talent and develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

Businesses that employ less than 1,000 people may be eligible for a grant of £1,500 towards the cost of hiring each 16-24 year-old Apprentice, up to a maximum of 10 per employer.
