Unexpected Tales Of The Archives At The Treasure House

Every picture tells a story, and so does every document. It’s amazing what can be revealed by simple, unassuming pieces of writing and imagery, as is demonstrated in a new and free exhibition, starting on Saturday, 15 February at the Treasure House, , running until 21 April.

‘Tales From The Archives’ uses unique, historic documents to follow stories of the lives of seven different characters in East Riding , from 1391, right through to the present day.

Among these tales include those of John of Arras, a 14th century shirt-maker; 17th century Hull merchant William Dobson; Snowden Dunhill, an East Riding farmer deported to in 1812; John Henry Lonsdale, a 19th century amateur photographer of and Private Sid Rippingale, a prisoner of war who escaped to freedom across the Alps in the Second World War.

Local historian, Dr Susan Neave also features, along with her sisters, for their remarkable story of becoming among the first female Freemen of Beverley.

Archives Manager, Ian Mason, said:

“The exhibition highlights the stories of just a few individuals, but there are lots more tales waiting to be discovered within our archives.”

An event to launch the exhibition will be held on Saturday, 22 February between 10am and 3pm, at the Beverley Treasure House, that will give people the opportunity to view a temporary display of related documents and have their questions answered by the archivists involved.

Also at the Treasure House on 4 March at 6.30pm will be a lecture given by two of the archivists, explaining all about the different tales from the archives.

The lecture will cost £5 per head and seats are available to book now.
