Bike About Town : The Best Way To Get Around Beverley?

Let’s face it, we live in a small enough town where it is very easy to get about without using a car.

It was a couple of summers back, while I sat in one of the infamous traffic jams in Beverley, when I decided, where possible and whenever practical, to ditch the car and use my bike.

Beverley is busy even at quiet times. How many times do you find yourself sat in traffic just trying to get from one side of the town to the other?

Then there are those tight spots, like Marks & Spencer’s Car Park, where because other motorists are waiting to park for free, the whole road is at times forced to wait.

After getting on my bike, it soon became clear that it was a lot quicker to pop into the bank or to the shops when you are not encumbered with a car. You can cycle right into the town centre, park your bike up for free and go about your daily business without stressing over a parking ticket running out.

There are of course some obvious issues with cycle paths in Beverley, where they exist. The one on Woodhall Way is not usable when the schools are open as the cars park in it.

Others are not very flat and can be filled with rubbish which make cycling in them hazardous, leading to damage to bicycles and sometimes injury to cyclists.

There is however signs that things are changing. The council is adding more cycle lanes and there are increasing numbers of bike stands in the town centre.

Apart from the benefits of not having to pay for parking and sitting in traffic, getting on your bike also provides a number of health benefits too.
