Longcroft Student Support Jacobs Well Philippines Appeal

Students and staff at Longcroft School have been supporting a local charity by collecting vital resources for the people in the disaster-struck Philippines.

Jacobs Well, based in Beverley, has been appealing for dried food, such as pasta and rice and has received much local support from businesses and residents.

Kim Carmichael, who teaches science at Longcroft and spearheaded the school’s involvement, said: “The images of the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan showed us how lucky we are – times may be tough at the moment, but here were people – children, families, the elderly – who had quite literally lost everything overnight. When I heard of the Jacobs Well appeal, it seemed like a natural thing for us to support through school”.

Students, their families and staff at the school all pulled together and brought in dozens of packets of rice and pasta, which were collected by Jacobs Well representative Sylvia Hood.

Mrs Hood said: “We are very grateful for the support of everyone at Longcroft, especially the students. I have worked with young people for many years and despite the often misplaced view that they are not community spirited, appeals like this show us that youngsters do care and they are a credit to their school and families.”

Longcroft student Sam Blencoe (14) said: “Donations of this kind show that we care about what is happening in other parts of the world and that helping others is the right thing to do.”

Fellow student Kiara Hartley added: “They might be thousands of miles away, but it’s important the people of the Philippines know we are here for them and we want to help where we can.”

The school also donated £654 to the national Philippines Relief Appeal, which was raised as part of a non-uniform day.

Ian O’Donnell, Headteacher, said: “We have some very generous and caring students, families and colleagues. Both the collection for Jacobs Well and the donation to the Relief Appeal have helped raise awareness in school of the issues affecting the Philippines. It may no longer be a story appearing on the news, but people are still struggling to survive, which is why we will continue to collect supplies for the next container.”

Jacobs Well now has plans for a second container of supplies and is still seeking donations. Longcroft students and families can still bring rice and pasta to school, whilst clothing, food and money can be donated by the wider community at the Jacob’s Well shop in Ladygate, Beverley, at the charity’s office next to the new Aldi supermarket in Swinemoor Lane, Beverley, or by visiting www.jacobswellappeal.org.
