For the past two years, St Nicholas Community Primary School has been working hard on improving basic skills across the school.
As part of this there has been a focus on maths, with a number of initiatives introduced. One of these has been to work in partnership with Tesco’s Beverley store to introduce a monthly maths challenge for the pupils to enjoy.
Each month, a group of children visit Tesco where they are challenged to test their maths skills by purchasing goods for a particular event and spending as close to a specific budget as possible – without the use of calculators. The events focus on healthy eating and give the pupils the opportunity to see maths in real-life contexts.
Liz Pollard, Head Teacher at St Nicholas said;
“Tthe visits have had such a positive impact on the children and as a result of all the work we have been doing. We have achieved 12% level 6 in maths. We are very proud of our achievements, and we greatly value the support we have received from Tesco’’
Dave Ryley, Community Champion at Tesco Beverley, said;
“Our store is delighted to be working so closely with St Nicholas, and it is fantastic to be involved with such a great initiative.”
“The children are always a credit to their school during the visits, and we look forward to continuing helping them to develop their enjoyment of maths.”
