Ringing Up The Memories At The Old School House

An iconic part of East Yorkshire’s heritage has been donated to a Beverley residential home to help those suffering from dementia.

A traditional cream telephone box, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and the type regularly seen around Beverley and Hull, has been donated by KC to The Old School House.

The distinctive telephone box will now be part of a memory garden in the grounds of the home, which is run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, on Walkergate in Beverley, which residents will be able to access.

Research shows that by introducing familiar objects, such as phone boxes, post boxes and old cars to the environment of those suffering from dementia has a very positive impact.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, portfolio holder for transformation and strategic partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Suffering from dementia is an ever increasing issue with our growing elderly population and brings huge demands on families and loved ones.

“A proven method of helping sufferers react favourably to their condition is providing a safe environment where they can be surrounded by familiar objects.

“KC’s provision of an old telephone box will help sufferers relate to a familiar object and is a much appreciated gesture.”

Councillor Richard Harrap, portfolio holder for adult and carer services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “When people’s memories deteriorate, it is objects such as these that remain familiar to them throughout their lives and are a source of reassurance.

“Being able to provide an environment that reminds people of forgotten memories is important and evidence suggests this can be achieved by providing visual and sensory stimulus.

“Something like a traditional phone box is a perfect example as most people were used to seeing them in their daily lives and have often used them in the past.

“I am sure this iconic telephone box in the memory garden will not just be a discussion point but bring back many happy memories.”

Alan Worthing, sales director at KC, said: “While our cream kiosks are very much loved and are still visible on our streets, they are not used as often as in days gone by.

“So we are happy to donate one to The Old School House to support the great work the team is doing to improve the lives of residents.”
