Newland Girls Visit Normandy Barracks

A group of girls from Newland School for Girls in recently visited the Defence School of Transport to gain a better understanding of what life in the Armed Forces has to offer.

The visit started with Commandant, Col Rob Peacock giving an overview of the training and facilities at DST, followed by Chief of Staff, Lt Col Mark Gore escorting the girls to one of the school’s vehicle storage facilities to view a display of protected mobility vehicles. Not only did the girls learn about the abilities of the vehicles.

They also gained an understanding of the weight of body Armour and webbing worn by force’s personnel when undergoing training or on operations.

The Newland School students were also lucky enough to witness military personnel undergoing training in one of the Schools simulators – RODET, a machine that simulates a vehicle being turned upside down and then proceeds to instruct the student to evacuate the vehicle safely.

On seeing the RODET in action one of the girls informed Maj Mark Winstanley that he could earn some extra money if he took the simulator to Hull Fair.

PE teacher at Newland School for Girls said,

“The girls were so excited to visit Normandy Barracks to meet the servicemen and women, some of whom had been to .”

“The girls were met by Officers’ who were happy to talk to them and introduce them to a number of vehicles used by the Armed Forces. The girls were fascinated by the RODET training.”

“They were also introduced to some armoury and webbing that the soldiers have with them when training and on operations.”

“Their knowledge and understanding of the armed forces and the work that is carried out at DST grew immensely over our afternoon visit, this was due to the organisation and dedication of Lt Col Mark Gore and the team. We would all like to say a big thank you.”

Lt Col Mark Gore welcomed the visit and hoped that the girls had gained an insight into military life and learned a lot from hearing about the real-life experiences of serving men and women.
