Braves Show Great Effort Against Strongest Side In The League

After an eventful weekend last week taking on the best the West side of the River Hull could provide the Beverley Braves were brought down to earth with a bump by one of the best sides to the east of the river, Holderness Vikings.

There was a lot of effort from the Braves, but missing a couple of key players, they struggled to turn the effort into points and were at times their own worst enemies turning the ball over to the opposition six times in their eighteen sets of six.

The Viking are a large, physical side but can also spread the ball wide well, and it was no surprise that they went in at half-time winning by 18 nil, two of those tries scored wide on the right, but duly converted with an excellent display of goal kicking.

To the Beverley Braves credit, they battled well and kept their heads up – they were 12 down within 5 minutes – but hard work in defence from George Bennett-Teare, Ethan Rowbotham, Will Sanford and Oliver Loney made sure this was not going to be too easy for their East Yorkshire rivals. Tom Cohen kept things tight in his centre position along with Jack Turner on the wing.

Despite the probing of and the well-timed passes of and man of the match there was very little opportunity for the Braves to take against such a well drilled defence.

William Wallis had a quiet game by his standards going close from dummy half late in the first half but still suffering the effects of illness earlier in the week he did not play a full game.

The second half was a closer affair, but it got a little scrappy with both sides giving regular penalties away. The Braves were, however, the first to strike in the second half. After Oliver Gresswell burst on to an Egan pass the position was set for George Lees to crash over in the right corner for his ninth try of the season.

The Vikings hit back almost straight away to score once again in the left corner to take the score beyond Beverley at 4-24. and Harry Newton both caused problems with their scoots from acting half-back, as did Ewan Morton with the limited opportunities he got.

Matthew Hutchinson put in some work in defence whilst William Kirkup brought the ball up well from full-back when he needed to. Tom Marr took an early knock and did not have a great deal of time on the pitch to impress but looked his assured self when he was on. This effort was all in vain however as Holderness crashed through near the sticks from a tap penalty when the Braves defence remained static to round the scoring.

Final Score: Beverley Braves 4 Holderness Vikings 30
