Mill Lane Yellows started their first season in the East Riding Girls Football League u16 division with a convincing victory playing some superb passing football against a Costello team who had finished 3rd in the division last season.

The Yellows know this season will be a challenge against some bigger more physical opponents, but they can be assured that further displays like this will ensure another successful campaign. Straight from the off Mill Lane were on the attack with some fast passing football and Costello, were thankful for goal keeper Nicole Gray for keeping the scores level.

Finally, the pressure told, a ball out of defence from defender found midfielder Morgan Nagee in space quickly getting the ball under control Nagee released a rampaging Charlotte Holliday down the right wing, beating two defenders on the way Holliday found striker Marie(Misty)Russell free in the penalty area who duly dispatched the ball into the back of the net scoring the Yellows first goal of the season. Credit to Costello who quickly equalised when a corner went unchallenged to make the scores at 1-1.

Buoyed by the equaliser Costello started to dominate and Mill Lane, were thankful for two fine saves from goal keeper Chloe Wheeldon to keep the scores level. With the goal confidence came flooding back and the Yellows scored two quick fire goals, both goals saw Nagee and Charlotte Holliday combine from their own area before Holliday released striker Russell into the Costello half before finishing both chances in style for a first-half hattrick and giving Mill Lane a 4-1 lead just before half time. Shell shocked after conceding three quick fire goals against their younger opponents Costello could have thrown in the towel, but no, they battled and were rewarded with a second goal to make the half time score 4-2 .

The second half started with Costello looking for the goal that would get them back into the game, but Mill Lane extended their lead when Emma Johnson found Tonya Storr charging into the area giving the Yellows a three goal cushion. Both sets of girls started to tire after their efforts, but more goals followed two for Costello and three more for Mill Lanes Marie(Misty ) Russell with further assists from Emma Johnson and Charlotte Holliday giving the Yellows a satisfactory 8-4 victory in their first game of the season.

After winning every game last season in the u14s the Yellows know this season will be more physically demanding, but on the evidence of this performance, they have lost none of their skill and desire in a superb team display.
