Beverley Braves Put In Convincing Performance To Beat Hull Victoria

Beverley Braves under 11s returned after an eight-week break from due to players not being available during the summer holidays with a convincing win over a battling Hull Victoria side.

The Braves could not have started better when electing to run on the last tackle of the first set of six, Tom Marr supplied the pass for.

Jack Turner to twist over the line and touch down, not just in his first match for the Braves but with his first touch of the ball. At 4- 0 the Braves still had a lot of defending to do as the Titans put pressure on the home line.

A big defensive effort from tackle machine , and a couple of crucial tackles on the Victoria left by Tom Cohen and Tom Colley ensured the Braves line remained intact.

Lewis Egan was dragged down short after a great break down the middle of the field, he will get that elusive try this season, but from the field position, Victoria conceded a penalty from which George Bennett. Teare used his size and strength to score.

Marry’s conversion made it 10 – 0. The Titans continued to pressure the Braves line but some great team defence notably from Matthew Hutchinson, and ensured a clean sheet by half-time.

Full back William Kirkup put in an assured display taking several high balls confidently, defending well when he had to and bringing the ball up to set the Braves back on the attack, a performance that would earn him the man of the match award.

Beverley had one more score before half-time, Ethan Rowbotham crashing over under the posts and with Marr adding the extras, it was 16-0 at the break.

The second half saw a change of personnel with Harry Newton coming on at hooker and Will Sanford and Oliver Gresswell joining the action after guesting for Victoria in the first half.

Henry Hughes put the Braves on the front foot with a barnstorming run down the right side. He was finally dragged down but from the resulting position, took the ball forward before popping up a pass to the supporting William Wallis to score his tenth try of the season. Walker converted to make it 22-0.

Victoria had played some good rugby and when they scored from a cross field kick, it was no more than they deserved. The reaction from Beverley to this setback was good.

However, with Joseph Dennis taking the ball up well and Dylan English having a couple of jinking runs before blasted through direct from a play the ball to score under the posts. With Walker’s conversion, it was 28-6.

Victoria pulled another score back to 28-10, but any chances of a comeback were snuffed out when Kirkup scored on the right, and Rowbotham capped a strong performance finishing the scoring wide on the left.
