RUGBY LEAGUE : Beverley Get Pre Season Under Way Against Tigers

The blue and golds travelled to the Roy Waudby Arena last Saturday for a testing pre-season friendly against Premier League opposition Cottingham Tigers.

In the final analysis they got just the tough workout that coach was looking for. A lifting second half performance saw them go very close to stealing a win. Beverley’s pack really took the game to their opponents. Nicky Cross and Adam Jobling- a close season capture from York based outfit Heworth- were outstanding.

Furthermore, Joe Wileman caught the eye and looks a certainty to cement a place in the starting lineup this season after been on the fringes for some time. Gavin Proctor was his usual lively self around the ruck areas.

The early exchanges of the game saw the home side race to a 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes as they caught the ring-rusty visitors’ cold.

Beverley ARLC were guilty of turning over possession early in the tackle count and put themselves under too much pressure. When they finally settled down they pulled back a try in the 35th-minute courtesy of Steve Connolly joining the line to score beside the posts. Watkin converted.

The home side scored another improved try just before the whistle for half time to lead 16-6.

Cottingham looked to be turning the screw ten minutes into the second half when they added another converted try to lead 22-6. However, this seemed to inspire the fight back. Telling breaks by and Jake Hart-Fisher set up the position for a quick play the ball which saw the ball shipped quickly to the left for Lee Falcus to score wide out and reduce the arrears to 10-22.

With the visiting pack now making inroads man of the match, Adam Jobling went over beside the posts for Wakin to add the extras.

The hosts showed signs of panic sending their restart kick out on the full. The resultant penalty and set of six saw the ever hardworking Ryan Watkin go over to convert his own try to level the scores at 22-22. The hosts managed to snatch victory with a try just two minutes from time.

Following a generally good afternoon, the blue and golds can now look forward to the start of the season on September 14th. That week is the
first round of the . However, they may receive a bye to the next round, so they may be playing a league match.
