Commandants Commendation For Sergeant Young

Sergeant Gareth Young has been awarded a Commandant’s Commendation for his contribution and commitment to sport at the Defence School of Transport. Hull born Gareth was presented the award by DST’s Commandant, .

The coveted award was in recognition of Gareth’s commitment to improving the delivery of physical, sporting and adventurous activities for students, military and civilian staff at DST.

On presenting the award to Sgt Young, Colonel Rob said that his contribution for the benefit of others has been immense. He even organised an excellent sports day for children of families at DST – and he runs 20 or so miles after each working day to keep himself fit!

Part of Gareth’s citation reads;

“Sgt Young is fully committed, engaged and involved in a wide range of sporting and community engagement activities at DST.”

“Since arriving at Leconfield he has sought out new responsibilities and challenges, such as volunteering as Secretary for UKSC(N) Cross Country and League, and committing himself to organise and run community engagement projects with local schools, the British Legion, HMP Everthorpe and with and Leeds Rhinos rugby league teams.”

“With his characteristic drive and enthusiasm, he has personally revitalised the DST cross country and athletics teams, leading by personal example and giving lots of his own time at evening and weekends to ensure success.”

“He is currently the UKSC(N) Cross Country Champion, finishing in the top 3 at the Army Steeplechase and winning the inaugural Grim Up North Mud Run in November 2012. He has organised the annual DST Adventure Training Exercise in Wales and competed in numerous other cross country, steeplechase and half marathon events, during which he raised monies for various charities.”

“He personally drives events such as the Unit Health Fairs, DST Commanders Challenge and healthy living initiatives in the gymnasium.”

Sgt Gareth Young said; “It’s really great to receive an award just for doing a job that I love.”
