Sports Students Thrive In College Environment

Two students are flying high with top marks after joining , unsure about their future direction.

Richard Warriner, from Willerby, and Andrei Gillett, from , both earned a distinction* (distinction star) in their Level Two BTEC Diploma in Sport and are progressing onto the demanding Level Three BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport Coaching, Development and Fitness.

Their achievement is all the more impressive as both enrolled at the College after year 11 on a level one foundation programme aimed at who are lacking confidence in their abilities or who have struggled at school.

The College’s success at helping learners develop at all levels was previously confirmed when Ofsted commented that “students make exceptional progress” there.

Their tutor, Abigail Fearn, said: “Richard and Andrei have done brilliantly well this year and have shown just how far learners can progress when they are studying a subject that interests them in the right environment.

“Their written and practical work have been excellent and they both had very successful placements in two very different areas of the sports industry, Richard with a physiotherapist and Andrei with a school in PE lessons and at an after-school club.”

Richard, 19, said: “I think I just needed somewhere I could progress and build my confidence up for that bigger course; to focus on what I wanted to do.

“I think in College it’s more fun and active. I’m really pleased that I’ve progressed and when I told my family they were amazed at what I had accomplished – I couldn’t believe it myself.

“I think the tutors have been incredible this year and the course I did before really set the benchmark for me.”

Andrei, 18, said: “I came on a foundation course because I wasn’t very sure what I wanted to do. I realised that I liked sport and came on the level two.

“At College you are able to do your own thing more and do the work at your own pace. You get a bit of freedom and you’re able to be more independent.

“I think all the tutors have been really helpful. They are really good to us and they have a lot of experience.”
