The Bells Of Beverley And Beyond

The Bells Of Beverley And Beyond

“Any bell, any person, any age, anyhow!” So reads the tagline to a festival of bells to be launched at 11:30am in Toll Gavel, , on Saturday 03 August 2013, where , the East riding of Yorkshire Town Crier and main organiser will be on hand to MC proceedings.

Michael explained:

“Last year on the morning prior to the opening of the London Olympics there was a ringing of bells Britain wide, which saw Beverley play a major part. The energy and fun of that day is what I am hoping to repeat on an annual basis.”

“For this new festival the key part of the day is a communal bell ring at12 noon in the courtyard of the Beverley Arms Hotel in Beverley’s . Everyone is invited to take part in a two-minute noise, which for this year is dedicated to St John, the founding father of Beverley. “

Other bell related activities throughout the day include: Morris, Folk and Lindyhop dancing, Hand Bell ringing, a bell colouring in competition for children, an amazing Quasimodo look-a-like, and visits up to St Mary’s Church Bell Tower for breathtaking views of the town.

The honour of launching the event will be given to 91-year-old Beverley born resident Reg Osgerby, whose father was a bellringer at St Mary’s Church for 50 years. Reg is the grandfather of Jay Osgerby who designed the 2012 Olympic Torch.

Reg had hoped to be an Olympic Torchbearer but wasn’t chosen. As such, he was the organiser’s first choice to open the event using the newly obtained mascot and showpiece of the festival – the Beverley Bell, which is said to have magic wishing powers.

Chairman of , said:

“The Bells Of Beverley And Beyond is just the kind of event to help put Beverley firmly on the map as a festival town and exactly what the town’s Georgian Quarter needs to establish itself as a welcoming host.”

Michael concluded:

“This is not just for Beverley locals but folks beyond Beverley as the festival title suggests. Whether it’s an alarm clock, a bicycle bell, a mobile ringtone, a school bell, or a vintage bus, it doesn’t matter.”

“Who knows, depending on how many turn up we may need to register for a Guinness World Record of the most rung bells in one place. Oh, and by the way, free earplugs will be provided.”
