Kind-Hearted Staff At EYMS’s Beverley Depot Club Together To Treat Local Boy

Inspirational. That is the word Bus Station Supervisor David Hunt uses to describe seven-year-old Lewis Harper, who has a passion for buses and trains.

David, along with his colleagues at Beverley Station and East Yorkshire Motors Services, have clubbed together to send Lewis on a dream trip on a classic bus and steam train.

Lewis, who attends Swinemoor Primary School and has learning difficulties, has just undergone his second operation in four years having a VP Shunt placed in his brain to help drain access fluids.

His mother Sarah Harper told HU17.net: “Words cannot describe how grateful I am. It is fantastic that Lewis is going to get to travel on a vintage bus and a steam train.”

David, who has known the family for some time, said: “Lewis is a brave little boy. I wanted to treat him so purchased trips through the bus company. Everyone else found out what I was doing, so they all clubbed together, and now we can not only send him on a trip but give him some spending money too.

“There are lots of kids out there like Lewis who are mad about buses, but he is special, he is absolutely mad for them but above all, he is inspirational and brave.”

The surprises did not stop there for Lewis at Beverley Bus Station. He was allowed to sit in the driving seat of a double decker and was also presented with a replica coach as a gift from Peter Shipp, Chairman of EYMS.

Carol Thompson, EYMS Beverley Depot Controller, said:

“We all know Lewis, as he loves coming to see the buses. I was looking through the day trips we have been running this year, and saw there was one with a vintage bus ride to see the steam trains in Pickering.

“I thought that Lewis would love that and after mentioning it to the drivers everyone contributed to pay for him and his mum to go on the trip.

“We were even able to give him a little spending money in a train-shaped tin.”

Everyone at EYMS hopes that Lewis enjoys his trip to Pickering, and gets well soon.
