Last Saturday, several members of Beverley Athletic Club made the trip over to the Yorkshire Dales to take part in the Wharfedale Half Marathon.
This is a regular trip for some club members, who make a weekend of the event by staying over in Kettlewell youth hostel for the nights before and after the race. The race is classified as a fell race, which means runners have to navigate a route over rugged and exposed countryside, although this year they were fortunate in experiencing fine weather.
The first runner home for Beverley was Steve Evins, who was 49th overall in a great time of 1:57:59. He was followed fairly closely by Graeme Pittaway, whose time of 2:04:08 gave him 76th place. Evins said ‘I really enjoyed the event – the conditions were great, and it was dry underfoot most of the way. It was a tough course with a couple of long uphill sections, but the beautiful scenery took your mind off the hard bits. I had a good race and was pleased to get a time of under 2 hours’.
Lucy Stamford and Tina Wardropper were the first Beverley women to finish, coming in just one second apart at 2:19:06 and 2:19:07. ‘It was a very warm day but breezy so we were kept cool. The half marathon is one of the toughest halves around and typically takes a lot longer than an average one, the route goes up and over to Kilnsey then up Mastilles Lane (a right killer) and back over the moor top into Threshfield’, commented Stamford
The Beverley team enjoyed the race and are planning to return again next year. Jo Dewar, who finished in 2:31:08, said that ‘as ever it was a well organised, tough and memorable run for me. Will be back next year with more friends in tow!’
The half marathon was won by Quentin Lewis (Baildon Runners) in 1:30:08, and the first female finisher was Lousia Pickles, who finished 9th overall in 1:42:24. There was a total of 215 finishers.
