Warriors Beat Braves At Beverley Leisure Centre

Matches between Beverley Braves and Myton Warriors have always been tight affairs at this age group and Sunday’s game at was no exception. Just like the cup tie between the two under 11 sides a few weeks before, the result was in doubt until the final whistle and just like the cup tie the final score came with seconds to go, but this time it was the Warriors victorious over the Braves.

It was always going to be a tough affair as the two teams went toe to toe, defences on top Oliver Gresswell turning in his best defensive stint of the season alongside the usual suspects when it comes to defence Oliver Loney and . Myton were the first to score playing to the Minster end the converted try game them a nil6 lead that they would never give up. That however only tells part of the story.

Henry Hughes drove the ball up well, Tom Cohen had a good run from dummy half and looked dangerous with a couple of weaving runs. All this built up the pressure on the Warriors line and after a quick tap after a penalty Tom Marr caught the defence napping to squeeze over in the corner and make it 4-6.

It was end to end stuff however and William Wallis fielded several Myton kicks well from full back, whilst also pulling off some crucial tackles and William Kirkup was a danger with ball in hand whilst defending well close to the line, also taking a high kick well behind the try line. George Bennet – Tere enhanced his reputation even further with another barnstorming performance and was very lucky not to have two tries, the first ruled out for a foot in touch, the second after being held up – a controversial decision, but not the only one in a match were the players gave everything and played the game at a good
pace.

The score remained 4-6 at half-time but the second half continued in the same vein. The Braves took the opportunity to change things around a little and nobody let the team down with Will Sanford putting in a good defensive stint and Tom Colley putting in some great tackles on players much bigger than him. Harry Newton made great yards with his trade-mark scoots and Matthew Hutchinson and Joseph Dennis took up the challenge against the big Myton forwards well, the latter taking a knock to the head which reduced his overall contribution to the game.

Dylan English took his chances well and whilst not getting the opportunities he did in the cup match George Lees caused problems when he ran with purpose. Behind all of this and Marcus Walker probed with darting runs and intelligent passes.

Myton were first to score in the second half making it 4-12, but not before Rowbotham got over the line only to have his ‘try’ ruled out for incorrect grounding. The Braves never gave up, knowing they could get over the Myton line and with a little luck over from another quick tap penalty after Rory Garbutt’s run to the line had been cut short by a high tackle. It remained 8-12 until the very final seconds when Myton scored after their third set of six in
the Braves half.

Final Score: Beverley Braves U11s 8 Myton Warrioris 16

Man of the match Loney for his workmanlike performance in both defence and attack.
