Disappointment For Blue & Golds In Council Cup

The blue and golds hoped to play this cup tie for league points in order for them to complete their league campaign. Their opponents astonishingly refused to agree to this.

The tie itself saw Beverley clearly second best but competed well in a spell just before and after the interval. A 20-minute spell in the second half saw a pacey Three Tuns outfit run in six tries to blast their way into the semi-finals.

The home side raced to a 14-0 lead in the first twenty minutes before the visitors had time to settle. Beverley warmed to the task and the strong running Ian Lane began the fight back with a try which was converted on the half hour mark. The visitors continued to enjoy more of the play, and a good ball of Steve Connolly sent pacey center Tom Moore away for a try, which further reduced the arrears to 14-10 just before the break.

The visitors went out for the second half with much more confidence playing some more enterprising rugby. It was some enterprising handling that allowed them to level the scores.

Mike Cooper, Ryan Watkin and Steve Connolly all combined to send Ben Calvert diving in at the corner. Watkin failed with the conversion kicking into a strong wind. Hopes were now high of passing through to the semis, but they were quickly extinguished. A blitz of tries saw the hosts go through.

stemmed the flow late in the game. Man of the match Ryam Watkin went over and converted his own try, which was a just reward for a gritty display.

At time of going to the press, there are no games this Saturday, and it is unlikely that Beverley will get to play their three remaining games. Coach Guy Adams expressed his disappointment at this as he had been hoping for a strong finish, possibly top four. This would be a big improvement on last season.

Unfortunately, this policy of playing cup games rather than league games seems to happen every season in the Hull & District League.
