Aubrey Morrell Comes Third In Hornsea

Athletes from local running clubs and from further afield gathered at Great Hatfield last Sunday to take part in the Third Marathon.

The race was the British Open National Championships for this distance, and was also a designated handicap race for Beverley AC. The club fielded a total of 23 runners, several of them using the race as a staging post for the upcoming on the 21st April.

After many weeks of very cold weather, conditions had improved for the weekend with warmer temperatures and lighter winds making good running conditions on the 8.74 mile undulating rural course on country lanes around Great Hatfield.

The first Beverley runner to cross the line was Aubrey Morrell, in an impressive third place overall and second in the V40 category. He completed the course in 49:37. Next home was Lewis Holloway who finished in 52:39, in tenth place overall at his first attempt at this race. He was closely followed by in eleventh place at 53:01. Dalton’s performance won him first prize in the V50 category for the second year in a row.

First female athlete over the line for Beverley was Angela Collins who was the 22nd woman overall in 70:16, followed by Dianne Coleman who came in at 75:39 and was 42nd in the women’s race. Pam Atkins was third woman for the club and once again won first prize in the FV65 category with a time of 77:58 which was over two minutes faster than her time the previous year

Other notable performances came from Peter Watkinson who was second in the V60 category with a time of 63:07, and Peter McNally who come third in the V70 category with a time of 93:11.

The Hornsea Third Marathon was organised by the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care. There were 338 finishers. The winner of the men’s race was Gregan Clarkson of Kingston upon Hull AC in 47:42. The first woman was Kim Threadgall of Valley Striders AC, Leeds, in 55:17.
