Beverley Progress To The Next Round

Beverley Town

Beverley were at home once again, in the second round of the Whiteheads Fish & Chips League Cup, against the team directly below them in the league Sculcoates Amateurs.

This was the third time this season the two teams had met with Town being victorious in both of the previous encounters.

The home team once again made changes, which emphasises the depth and talent of the squad, with a slight change in formation Danny Norton, Richard Gibson and Daniel Kingsley came in for the rested Rob Northern, Mike O’Connell and Luke Thompson who dropped down to the bench.

The home team started the game well, with Captain John Ricardo and player manager wining the majority of possession in the centre of midfield. This was giving the wide players and in particular Danny Norton plenty of opportunity to express himself on the right hand side, as he consistently was posing problems for the away team defence.

For all their territorial dominance, Beverley were struggling to break Sculcoates defence down, an opportunity for Jonny Ricardo was snuffed out as the ball dropped to him on his right side, he tried to manoeuvre it back onto his left, but this gave the defender the chance to recover and clear the ball away.

Any breakaways from the away team were dealt with; centre backs Asa Pardoe and Dane Mortimer were marshalling the defence well, and managing to condense the play leaving little space for Sculcoates top goal scorer Michael Leng.

The second half began with Town nearly taking the lead, good play down the right hand side from full back Mike Dixon; who has been outstanding in the last few weeks, after missing a month through having his appendix removed.

Dixon released Kingsley, who skipped past the full back and delivered an excellent cross which Tyler Collishaw coming in from the left should have finished, but unfortunately his header was poorly executed as it flew wide of the upright.

Beverley replaced Kingsley with top scorer Northen and he had an impact straight away jinking through but his shot was well saved by Jamie Hitchcock in the opposition goals.

But this resistance didn’t last long as Northen once again in the inside left channel darted into box and gaining half yard to unleash a shot towards the goal, which took a deflection to take the ball over the hand of the keeper for his fifteenth goal of the season.

Town were in control now with Northen, Collishaw and Norton all threating to increase the lead.

As the home side moved towards the final whistle with the game looking quite comfortable. A rare mistake from goalkeeper Adam Nicholson, when he hesitated in coming for the ball, meant the away team striker looping the ball goal wards and Danny Moon managed to get above Dixon on the line to nod home although looking suspiciously in an offside position.

This equaliser sparked joyous scenes from the opposition and both teams were preparing themselves for extra time.

But Beverley had other ideas, two mins into stoppage time, great work on the left hand side by James Whittingham, led to him freeing Northern on the touch line, he had the presence of mind and vision to pick out the unmarked Collishaw, who side footed first time into the back of the net, giving Sculcoates no time whatsoever to recover.

So as per last week Town have defeated the second and third teams in the league three times. This really send out a clear message that momentum is the key to success and winning games becomes a habit and an expectation which can only develop a positive culture within the team.

With this victory the team now move into the next round where they entertain Pocklington Town in the quarter finals at home. But they return to league action next week where after playing teams in the top half of the league, they have a different challenge of a team in the lower half, as visit Norwood Park.

They themselves will be no pushover; they will be especially encouraged after defeating Sculcoates themselves a fortnight ago by four goals to one.
