Beverley Launches Oxfam Get Together

Beverley was the venue for the launch of a new Oxfam campaign.

Supporters from Beverley gathered at the Oxfam bookshop on Toll Gavel to enjoy a chocolate tasting from Lempicka Cafe.

The event, held on Tuesday evening, saw Beverley’s launch of Get Together which is an opportunity for groups to organise their own events which will raise money for Oxfam’s projects to support women around the world. Oxfam is raising awareness of the discrimination many women face such as domestic violence, discrimination, and a lack of education opportunities.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr said: “Once again I am delighted to see Oxfam not only supporting such an important event as International Women’s Day, but encouraging every one of us to create our own occasion to raise awareness and money to help women fight oppression and poverty throughout the world.”

“I’ve been saddened by recent reports in the world news about the poor treatment of women and feel that Oxfam’s campaign is a very timely in raising awareness of discrimination and how it can be reduced. I am also convinced that improving the lives of women will have an automatic and positive effect on needy children in society.”

A Get Together event can be anything from a gathering at school, an event at a workplace or a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. The bookshop launch has seen many Beverley residents begin to plan their ideas.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor have pledged to hold a drinks party at the Mayor’s house on the 8th March and to have a raffle and delicious nibbles for their guests!

Louise Turner, 49, from Welton, who works at Beverley Grammar School, is going to do a lunch at school on 8th March for her colleagues.

Alexander Slingsby, 19, student of English at Hull University, and Nathan Ford, 16, student of Forensic Science at from Swinemoor, Beverley are hoping to get all their friends and family together for food, drinks and laughs!

Nathan said: I can’t wait to get my ideas pack through the post. We’re planning a meal for a large group to raise money for this cause. I got involved with the Oxfam bookshop through volunteering with St John’s Ambulance. I think charity work will always be a big part of my life and we’re all really excited about putting on our own event.’
