Lucy Stamford Comes Third In Boxing Day 10K

More than a hundred dedicated runners assembled at Harriers clubhouse in Saltshouse Road on Boxing Day to run off the excesses of Christmas Day in the club’s annual Boxing Day 10k.

It was a fine sunny morning and although it was fairly cold runners soon warmed up on the route along Holderness Road to Ganstead and Swine Lane. A very strong headwind tested everyone’s stamina on the two-mile section along the old railway track and described the race as a “tough run.” She was the first lady to finish and the third lady overall. She was followed closely by Tina Wardropper and Tanwen Gray in 5th and 7th places respectively in the ladies’ competition.

Pete Fielding-Smith was the first Beverley runner to cross the finishing line. He was eleventh overall in 39:16. Darren Edge followed in 40:06 in his second race for the club.

After a day of festive food and drink the race offered runners an opportunity to get some exercise and to take the race as seriously as they wanted. For Beverley AC’s it was another step towards recovery from an ankle injury which has prevented him running for most of the year. He finished in 15th place in a very encouraging time of 40:43 and only 17 seconds slower than the last time he ran this race in 2010.

Andrew and Debs Brant both had excellent runs and finished several minutes faster than last year in 47:42 and 49:58 respectively.

There were 130 finishers and the race was won by Stuart Carmichael of City of Hull AC in 34:22. The first lady was Jo Hall, also of City of Hull AC, in 43:18.
