Drivers Urged To Plan Ahead Over The Festive Season

Beverley Fire Station

In a bid to keep safe this Christmas, is urging drivers to take extra care whilst driving on the region’s roads.

Dark mornings, dark nights and freezing weather conditions can make driving conditions hazardous. Last year, the Service attended 29 road collisions throughout December alone and are urging people to take the weather conditions in to account before making a journey.

Louise Marritt, road safety team leader for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Winter weather can make the roads hazardous. It is important to be aware of the weather forecast and plan your journey accordingly. It may sound obvious, but in ice and snow, it is essential to slow down and drive to the weather conditions, if you skid on black ice, and you are travelling at a reduced speed, you will have more time to react.”

It is also the time of the year when Christmas parties are in full swing and planning journeys in advance are especially important if people plan on having a festive drink.

“It is important to think ahead about your arrangements and get a lift or book a taxi. The morning after the night before you can still be over the drink driving limit, so take this into consideration before making a journey.” Louise added.

Here are a few tips to help you be prepared for bad weather.

• Check your local weather forecast before you travel and plan your journey accordingly
• If you are going to drink alcohol, do not drive, organise a lift or book a taxi
• Check there is anti-freeze in your radiators and sufficient tread on your tyres
• Make sure your windscreen wipers are in good working order, and your screen wash is full
• Ensure all the windows are FULLY cleared of ice
• Manoeuvre gently, avoiding harsh breaking or acceleration
• Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin, If you start to skid, ease off the accelerator but do not break suddenly.
• Avoid overtaking (unless absolutely necessary)
