More Disappointment For Blue And Golds Against Haworth Park

The blue and golds will be very disappointed to have not taken both points from this encounter at Haworth Park. They led 12-0 after 15 minutes and were 22-14 up with just 15 minutes to go.They clearly have the ability to win games like this but a little bit of tactical naivety at times proved to be their undoing.

, Ben Calvert and Callum O’Connor were all unavailable so Andy Peacock slotted into the Centre, Ian Lane into the standoff half position and Mark Nicholson got a first start this season in the second row.
The home side made an early break only for a try saving tackle from Steve Connolly, which saw him pinch the ball and also return the ball up field with interest.
The visitors were first on the scoreboard courtesy of an Ian Lane try converted by Watkin. The lead increased a few minutes later when an Andy Peacock interception saw him race 50 meters only to be pulled up short. However, the field position was set up for Mike Cooper to go over for a try which was again improved by Watkin.

The visitors looked in complete command at this stage, but a few handling errors allowed their opponents back into the game. Haworth pulled back two tries to reduce the Beverley’s lead to 12-10 at the interval.

The second half started with handling error early in the tackle count which the hosts took maximum advantage to score an unconverted try to lead 14-12. Beverley then settled down to the task in hand and forwards Lee Stevens and Mark Nicholson began to grind out some hard yards.

In the 50th minute, a crisp handling movement sent Mike Cooper over for his second try. Gavin Proctor also added a try from close range and at 22-14, the blue and golds looked to be a good bet for a second successive win especially given their tendency to finish games strongly.

However, the one further try that could have put the game to bed eluded Beverley, and the hosts soaked up the pressure and eventually gained the field position to score two further tries and lead 24-22 with just injury time to go.

The game was littered with stoppages and there was at least five minutes of injury time but Beverley could not snatch that vital score.
Man of the match was Lee Stevens, who impressed with his non stop charges but full back Steve Connolly ran him close with another exemplary display of clearing his lines and last ditch defence.

This Saturday the blue and golds will have the day off as there are no Hull & District League fixtures due to the Grand Final.

The next game is the tie at home to Halifax Irish on the 13th October.
