Go Behind The Scenes At Beverley Treasure House

Heritage buildings all over England will be running special events for next weekend’s national Heritage Open Day and East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Archives and Local Studies Service will be throwing open the doors at the Beverley Treasure House for their annual open day on Saturday, 8 September, from 9am-4pm.

Members of the public will be able to see hundreds of local archives and heritage documents and go behind the scenes at the venue in Beverley.

The exhibition of unique historical archives will relate to this year’s celebration of , play and games. People from all over the globe have come to the UK this year for the Olympics and Paralympics but the archives will also show the links the East Riding has had with the rest of the world throughout .

Members of staff will be on hand, especially dressed in period costume, to answer any questions about the displays. If the recent series of Who Do You Think You Are? Has inspired you to trace your family history then staff will be available to help you get started. There will also be children’s activities available, including , word searches and quizzes. Visitors can also try their hand at writing with a quill pen.

Visitors to the open day will also have a rare chance to go behind the scenes on guided tours. There will also be demonstrations on how books and papers are repaired in the conservation workshop and a brief film show.

Ian Mason, archives and local studies manager, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to visit and see for themselves the amazing range of history we hold in the Treasure House.”

The event is free and everyone is welcome.
