Beverley art Gallery To Hold Hilary Cartmel Exhibition

Beverley Art Gallery is delighted to be staging a stunning solo exhibition of metalwork sculptures by Nottinghamshire artist .

Hilary Cartmel – It’s All in the Mind will run at Beverley Art Gallery from 14 July to 15 September, and although it is the first time her work will have been exhibited in Beverley, Hilary has produced many artworks for public spaces across the Yorkshire region and beyond.

Hilary, who studied Fine Art at in the early 1980s, has produced public commissioned works, including a series of huge metal screens at Rotherham’s transport interchange, wall tiles along the canal path at Beeston, Nottinghamshire and floor inlays in the centre of Banbury.

It’s All in the Mind exhibition will focus on Hilary’s latest sculptures from two-metre high floor standing pieces to small cased objects and reoccurring motifs include heads, birds, nests and plants.

Central to the sculptures is the desire and struggle to describe the intangible and transient (such as human imagination and memory) in a physical form.

The awareness that one’s abilities are a passing gift, and that age brings with it loss and failure as well as wisdom and insight is also a reoccurring theme in the work.

Sally Hayes, curator (exhibitions) at Beverley Art Gallery, said: “We are delighted to be exhibiting Hilary’s work at the gallery.

“The sculptures are beautifully crafted, have intriguing and poetic titles such as Head with Empty Nest and December Gardener Dreaming of Spring and are sure to appeal to a wide range of visitors.”

On Saturday, 18 August, there will be a drop-in art and craft session for families inspired by the exhibition.

The session will run between 10am and 3pm and will give families the opportunity to make a wire sculpture, have a go at quilling or make a collage or greetings card.

There is no need to book, and while the event is free, donations of at least £1 to cover the cost of materials would be appreciated.
