  1. At 19 minuets past four a man ran past Market Place with no support vehicals carrying an Olympic torch. Many of the crowd broke up, I thought that they must have started the torch carrying too early because it takes more than two and a half minuets to get from Mill lane to the Market Place. A few minuets later; Michael Nicholson (who was supposed to be the first carrier) arrived followed by the entourage.
Who was; “The Mystery Man” who went past first?

  2. Yes I too (along with many others) thought this was the real thing and went home! Apparently the guy was was merely going down to his starting point further up.Very confusing and badly organised- apparently even some of the ‘officials’ thought that was it. Wasn’t helped by him waving to the crowd and holding the torch up as he passed us.

  3. Sarah L may be correct and the ‘mystery torch bearer’ was an official bearer, which means that he was either: Haydn Pitchforth or James Lambswood . It was not the seventeen year old Lambswood, so must have been Pitchforth, he was not in the official Olympic Strip when he ran through the Market Place, wearing a pair of jeans. There is a clip of him on the web:

It shows him on Butcher Row, now in the correct strip (where did he change) chatting to the crowd and waiting for Mike Nicholson to arrive and take over the lighted torch.
So it must have been Pitchforth who caused all the confusion.

  4. Sorry to contradict but I have a photo of him in the market place wearing the full strip (not jeans) waving to the crowd and holding the torch up (I would upload it if I knew how!). Granted the torch was not lit – but it still caused much confusion. I have spoken to a number of people since Monday who also left the market place after Hadyn passed through. This is obviously not a dig at Haydn as presumably he was just doing as instructed. Perhaps he should have been told to walk down not holding the torch.
