Police Take Part In Rogue Traders Day

are participating in a rogue traders event on Thursday 31 May 2012 in the Beverley area.

Officers will be joined by officers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Trading Standards and Streetscene Services, taking part in an event aimed at cracking down on offenders who target vulnerable and elderly members of the community by charging extortionate rates for unnecessary and below standard work.

PC Martin Pepper of Beverley Neighbourhood team said: “Residents are still being targeted by traders who knock on the door without warning, trying to sell goods and services. They often offer to carry out free checks hoping to sign you up there and then.

“Rogue traders often skirt very close to breaking the law but sadly sometimes do not cross the line legally, instead choosing to con their victims out of significant quantities of cash by using unethical hard sell tactics.

“These criminals are ruthless and determined to make money regardless of who they approach and how unsuitable the product or service is.

“Humberside Police will not tolerate doorstep crime such as this and will work together with our partners in Trading Standards to tackle it.”

Councillor Jackie Cracknell, cabinet portfolio holder for community partnerships at the East riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“Unfortunately disreputable firms often target older residents and adults at risk by making unsolicited visits or telephone calls. Residents should be aware of this and treat all uninvited callers with caution.”

There are a number of measures you can put in place to reduce your risk of being targeted by a rogue trader:

• Keep your front doors locked.
• Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting anyone.
• If you do answer the door, put the door chain or bar on first.
• Ask for identification and check it thoroughly.
• Only let them in when you are absolutely sure that they are genuine.
• You have a window of 7 days to cancel work.
• You should always ensure you get quotes before agreeing to work.
