United Clinch Title With Victory At Rangers

The sun was shining for United Girls’ last game of the season away at . Mill Lane United needed a draw or better in order to win the East Riding Girls League and avoid a play-off against North Ferriby for the title.

Both sides started brightly and were evenly matched in the opening stages, with the solid defensive partnership of and Ellie McMillan keeping the Cottingham attack at bay.

Mill Lane United’s midfield fought for every ball and began to find gaps in the strong Cottingham defence with Chloe Davison providing excellent service for the wingers Isobel Gillyon and Connie Forward. Eventually the pressure paid off and , playing as a lone striker, was able to break the deadlock.

Cottingham stepped up their attack with Chloe Hakeney called upon to make some fantastic saves in the Mill Lane United goal. With Cottingham looking for an equaliser Mill Lane United’s midfield were able to exploit the space and extend their lead through a well-taken goal from Isobel Gillyon.

Cottingham refused to be beaten and stepped up their attacks but excellent defensive work from Gray and McMillan kept them out and allowed Hope Barrett to score twice, one an excellent strike from the edge of the area leaving the Cottingham keeper no chance.
After the half-time break Cottingham’s persistence paid off and the goal seemed to enthuse their attacking players.

Mill Lane United now had to defend against a constant barrage of attack. However, Alex Clark and Isobel Gillyon offered some relief with some excellent running with the ball and Rebecca Long providing some decisive tackles in the middle of the park. Isobel Gillyon finished a polished performance with another goal, leaving Mill Lane United the victors and League champions.
