Holderness Prove Too Strong For Blue and Golds

The blue and golds travelled out to Keyingham last Saturday on a near perfect Spring afternoon welcoming back Lee Stevens, Gavin Platt and Adam Norton from their various work commitments to bolster up the pack. This game was always going to be a tough ask against the runaway league leaders.

The progressive Holderness outfit have assembled a skilful, pacy and youthful side which has been the culmination of years of youth development in the Holderness villages. They will shortly leave the Winter league to compete in the Yorkshire East regional league which is part of the RFL’s pyramid structure and has seen them obtain funding for a brand new enclosed playing area.

Beverley competed well for most of the game and can consider the score line a little harsh with the home side scoring at least a couple of tries that seemed to contain knock ons and forward passes in the build up. The visitors seemed to compete well in the forwards with Adam Norton, Lee Stevens, Gareth Lane and Dan Clark leading the charge.

However they struggled when the opposition moved the ball wide and utilised their superior pace. The home side built up a 20-0 interval lead with Ian Lane going closest to scoring for the visitors when he was hauled down following a barnstorming run over 40 metres just before the interval.

The hosts added a further two scores shortly after the break before Beverley ARLC managed to get some quality possession and territory.

The committee man of the match Ryan Watkin who worked tirelessly all afternoon did well to get the ball down despite the best efforts of at least three defenders to hold him up over the line. Watkin converted his own try and reduce the arrears to 6-30.

Beverley’s backs worked overtime trying to contain the home back division with Lee Atkinson, Mark Killey and all coming out with credit. They tried in the closing stages with Holderness adding a further three tries to conclude the afternoons scoring.

Coach commented afterwards ” This is a great bunch of lads and if they continue to show this spirit we will turn things around”

This Saturday Beverley are away to Tigers in the Clive Sullivan Memorial Round Robin Trophy kicking off at 2pm at the Roy Waudby Complex. They still have one outstanding league fixture against which will have to be fitted in sometime before the end of the season.
