Beverley Civic Society and representatives of the town’s young people planted their sixth and final new tree on the Westwood to finish their contribution to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.
The idea to plant trees to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee was initially raised by Pat Deans several years ago, and after much discussion it was decided to plant six new lime trees as a continuation of an existing line on the Westwood.
All six trees have been sponsored by separate groups and individuals. They are: BDCSA, Leslie Frooms, society president Tom Martin, Molescroft Primary School, Beverley High School and Longcroft School for the Performing Arts.
The first five trees were planted on February 6, but one was left until today (Tuesday 28 February) so students could be involved in the final planting.
President Tom Martin was present to say a few words to mark the ceremony, and the Beverley Civic Society’s Sandra Ryan explained why it was important to ensure local young people were involved in the final project.
She said: “Having children and young people in attendance is really great and helps to bridge the generation gap.”
All six sponsors will have plaques with the trees to mark their contribution to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
