East Riding College has unveiled plans for its new £14m Beverley campus which forms part of the Flemingate redevelopment project.
The four-storey building will feature the latest in teaching and learning technologies and a range of “green” elements to make it one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the region.
Detailed plans for the College have been submitted along with those for the wider Flemingate scheme, with a planned opening date of September 2013.
The costs of the campus will be met by the College and by a £2m capital grant from the Skills Funding Agency.
Principal Derek Branton said:
“This is an exciting time for East Riding College and we are looking forward to moving into a purpose-built 21st century campus.
“Our architects have designed a building which is modern yet sympathetic to Beverley’s historic nature, and which features the very latest in teaching and learning technologies.
“As well as the benefits to education, the new campus will have much better transport links and improved accessibility, and will be part of the largest town centre development in Beverley for many years.”
“The new campus will further enhance the College’s learning facilities following the opening of our new campus in Bridlington in 2009, making it one of the best equipped nationally.
The new campus will feature 30 teaching rooms with specialist IT facilities, and a large Learning Resource Centre with access to a wide range of digital and printed reference materials.
It will also feature industry standard hairdressing and beauty therapy salons, a restaurant and a travel agency, which will provide realistic training facilities for students and be open to paying members of the public.
One of the key elements is the Environmental Technology Centre, a section of the building dedicated to providing resources for enterprises specialising in the growing renewable energy technologies so important to the future economic development of the Yorkshire and Humber region.
It will provide workshop, conference and meeting space to enable companies to develop their skills and share knowledge with others.
The architects, Jefferson Sheard Architects, have designed a highly environmentally friendly building and it is hoped the campus will earn an “excellent” rating under the national assessment scheme for sustainable buildings.
The “green” elements of the building include photovoltaic (solar) cells to generate electricity, air source heat pumps and a biomass boiler to reduce the use of fossil fuels in heating the building and rain water harvesting to flush the toilets.

I looked at some plans a few years ago, I do not know it the plans have changed.
At the moment the college has a very large car park with facilities for the staff to park between buildings and two car parks for students and yet people attending still have to park along Molescroft Road. The plans that I saw had car parking for fifty people! That is staff and students. When I asked about this I was told that the multistory car park would accommodate any overflow, this car park that will serve all the shops and the hotel is about as big as Tesco car park. Another reply was: “It is next to the railway station” The College may be but the people attending it may live miles from a station. Obviously no one will take any notice of this but, if you are about when it opens, do not visit in a car!
