Beverley Runners Dominate Orienteering at Hull University

Hull University was the latest venue on Saturday for newcomers to try out the sport of orienteering. South Cave’s Brian Ward from the Humberside and Lincolnshire Orienteering Club (HALO) had planned four courses of differing lengths and complexity.

The courses covered all parts of the University campus and featured many baffling route-choice decisions. All courses used electronic timing.
The courses were dominated by members of HALO’s Monday Night Orienteering Club at Longcroft School.

The Short, Medium and Long courses were all won by regulars from these sessions, with the Monday night coach, Neil Harvatt winning the Technical course. The narrowest winning margin was on the Long Course where Beverley’s Lindsey Brittain won by 9 seconds over one of the University students, demonstrating that local knowledge of the area won’t guarantee success. The Technical course caught out a number of people, with both the current, and a past, chairman of HALO being disqualified.

There is another chance soon to try out orienteering, this time in the more conventional setting of the Humber Bridge Country Park. This will be held on Saturday December 17th from 1pm to 3pm, participants should use the Foreshore entrance, parking in the Old Mill car park.
