Beverley Lights Up On November 30th

Beverley’s North Bar will light up for the first time in 114 years as part of the lights switch-on spectacular later this month.

The lighting up of the landmark will be the grand finale of the biggest Christmas lights event ever in the town.

Running from the Bar all the way to , there will be a wide variety of activities, street entertainment and live bands, with traditional food sellers including roast chestnuts and a hog roast.

A nativity procession will make its way from Wednesday Market, performing scenes from the Christmas story at points throughout the town centre and stilt-walking elves will be striding around during the evening.

will be broadcasting live from the event and will be interviewing visitors, and the All For One will be singing throughout the celebrations.

The Christmas tree lights will formally be switched on by Lady Pauline Prescott and the North Bar switch-on will be performed by the Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister, the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding.

“We’re expecting the biggest crowds ever for the best and brightest Christmas lights event Beverley has ever seen,” said Julian Minshall, chairman of the late night Christmas group (Beverley Chamber of Trade).

“The town centre will be full of events and activities, and shops throughout the town are joining in to make this a fun and festive family occasion.

“We expect Beverley will be bustling like never before on an evening and we’re encouraging people of all ages to turn out to have a look at what is going on.

“There will be lots happening from 6pm so I urge people to turn up early to take advantage of everything.”

Shops in the town will stay open until 8pm as part of the celebrations, with shopkeepers putting on activities of their own for people to join in with.

The schedule for the evening is as follows:
• 5.45pm in Wednesday Market: Schools advent competition prize winners announced
• 6pm in Wednesday Market: Christmas tree lights switch on with Lady Prescott and the Beverley Grammar School Brass Band
• 6pm in Wednesday Market: Nativity procession begins
• From 6pm on Angel Square: Beverley Brass Band perform
• From 6pm in : Viking FM broadcasting live and All For One choir
• Approx 6.15-6.30pm at Wilkinson corner: Christmas Tree Lights Switch On with Lady Prescott and the Friends of the East Riding Orchestra
• 7pm in Saturday Market: Nativity procession draws to a close
• 7.30pm at North Bar: Lights switch-on with the Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister and singing from the All For One choir

Late night opening will continue on the December 7, 14 and 21, with shops staying opening until 7pm.
