New Funding Rules Mean Courses For Just £20

New national funding rules aimed at getting people into work mean those on benefits can take courses for as little as £20 at from this September.

Late changes announced last week mean people aged 19 and over who are on a range of benefits get free tuition and will only pay  a small administration fee and, in some cases, exam and awarding body fees.

It means people on Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment Support Allowance (Work-Related Activity Group) only have to pay £20 to study on full-time and part-time courses at East Riding College this year.

Those receiving Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit and Income Support only pay the £20 and examination fees as long as they are unemployed and are taking the course to help them get a job.

Principal said:

“These late changes made by the Skills Funding Agency represent a major effort to help unemployed people get back into work by ensuring that many more can afford to strengthen their CV with a new qualification.

“They are a clear reflection of the important role that the Government sees for colleges in providing skills training to prepare unemployed people to re-enter the job market.”

East Riding College is currently enrolling people on full and part-time courses ready for induction week next week, though people can join courses in the coming weeks if there are places.

The College is also rolling out Skills Support for the Unemployed programmes in the East Riding and Hull and a Skills Support for Redundancy programme in Hull.

These give unemployed people and people who have been made redundant free access to shorter courses in a range of areas – including welding, catering, health and safety, plastering and IT – as well as support with writing a CV and applying for a job.
