Hard Work Pays Off For GCSE Students

The hard work of pupils and schools across the East Riding has been rewarded by record breaking GSCE results.

With a few results still to be processed, schools within the have seen the number of learners achieving five passes at A* to C grade rise significantly to 81 per cent, more than 10 per cent above the national average of 69.9 percent.

The GCSE average point score for all students has also risen for the sixth consecutive year by 10 points to 470.

It is expected the percentage of good GCSE grades, including English and mathematics to be close to last year’s figure of 59 per cent.

We are particularly proud of the following results returned

*     School who exceeded top 25 per cent predictions for their results and close to top10 per cent  progress, achieving 61 per cent good grades (A*-C) and 40 per cent good grades including English and mathematics

Alison Michalska, director of children, family and adult Services at the East Riding of Yorkshire council today told us:

‘We are tremendously proud that year after year young people continue to achieve even better GCSE or “level 2” results in East Riding secondary schools in a wide range of qualifications.  These outstanding results are underpinned by many individual stories of hard work and application as well as committed teaching and support.

‘We are delighted that schools’ results continue to improve from our position as a high performing local authority. The performance in the gold standard of 5 or more A*-C grades including English and mathematics, shows that key numeracy and literacy skills continue to thrive alongside other subjects and that we have got the balance right in our secondary schools.’

‘We are proud of the work done by young people throughout the East Riding with the support of their carers and families. We greatly appreciate the hard work of Head teachers and school staff that has contributed to the significant improvements in learners’ results in our schools over the last few years.  That they achieve this against a backdrop of a relatively low level funding for education in the East Riding  is a testament to their determined commitment to their pupils’ achievement.’

Councillor Julie Abraham, portfolio holder for children, young people and schools, said: “Today is the culmination of several years of hard work for our young people and schools. I know that our young people deserve to be up there amongst the best and I hope that all of those receiving their results can take pride in their own personal achievement, whatever level they have been working to.”

Acting head teacher at Howden School and College, Garry Garghan, said: “We are thrilled with these results which show a 10 per cent improvement on the gold standard results this time last year.

“These results are a testament to all of the hard work out in by everyone connected with the school. Students, staff, parents and carers, governors, community partners and the local authority have all worked together to move the school forward.

“These results, the best in the of the school, demonstrate that we are well on course to cast off the special measures label during this coming academic year.”
