Ray Teal’s Cricket Round Up

York Senior League Division 2

2nd XI lost to Whitkirk by 8 wickets

2nd XI 146 all out
Whitkirk 149 for 2

CC 2nd Xl came back down to earth with a bump on Saturday after the previous weeks impressive away win. Having won the toss Beverley controversially elected to bat first. They got off to a very slow start before losing two quick wickets. Paul Best (15) and Tim Smith (22) both made starts without going on to make a telling contribution as the top order collapsed. None of the rest of the top six made double figures and Beverley were deep in trouble until Phil Du Boulay and Pete Parnaby put together a decent partnership. Du Boulay looked in good touch until, on 38, he tried to hit a maximum to the long boundary and couldn’t reach and Parnaby made 27 before falling LBW. Once they had departed the tail managed a few lusty blows and Beverley finished on a well below par 146 all out.

With the outfield drying out Whitkirk got off to a real flier with the Beverley attacking struggling to contain them. Captain Smith shuffled his attack the best he could but Whitkirk breezed home by eight wickets with fourteen overs to spare. On this occasion Town did not have the bowling attack to rescue them and they slip to sixth place in Division 2.

East Yorkshire Alliance Division One

Beverley 4th XI lost to Patrington II by 130 runs

Patrington 237 for 6
4th XI 107 all out

The 4th XI lost to league leaders Patrington 2nds in hugely disappointing as they let themselves down in the field and with the bat. After last weeks excellent fielding display more could reasonably expected but Town dropped opener McKinley once and Critchley many times as the latter made a century. Visiting captain Ratcliffe was missed first ball and went on to smash a rapid half century as Patrington clocked up 237 for 6 from their 44 overs. Remarkably, for a large total, four of the visitors were dismissed without scoring. Sam Welburn, ten overs for 34, was the bowler most hard done to as chances went begging from his very good spell. Matt Novis persevered to take 4 for 59 and there was a wicket each for Kez and Al Hammond.

The Town innings was distinctly disappointing as only RJ Thompson made double figures. His lone vigil at the wicket was only ended, when on 54, he miscued to point, his third half century in three games.  Several of the batsmen were out to poor shots and only James Broekhuizen could consider himself really unlucky. A total of 107 all out did not do the good wicket justice and Town slipped to fourth in the league table after picking up just two points.

Despite the disappointment of last Saturday the youthful 4ths, with a new captain for 2011, can look back from the halfway point in the season with some satisfaction. They have won five games and only lost three. Kez Thompson (15) and Matt Novis (14) head the bowling averages and senior players RJ Thompson and captain Rich Simpson head the batting. Simpson will be looking for the younger batsmen to step up a gear and for a distinct improvement in the fielding in the second half of the season.
