Ken Hailstone’s 1922 Coventry Eagle 2 Speed @ Beverley Classic Car Rally

Ken Hailstone looks the part for his 1922 Coventry Eagle 2 Speed, and it wasn’t just for show.

Ken, from Willerby, is a committed bike addict, spending a lot of his time restoring British bikes of all ages. He’s currently working on bikes such as Nortons and Goldstars.

But he knew which bike would attract the most interest, and his flat tank bike certainly did that.

“It’s an early bike, and a lot of bikes of this age were almost basically bicycles with an engine on them,” Ken told .net.

“So the flat tank was easy to bolt on. The bike is actually quite advanced for the era.”

Coventry Eagle had established the reputation in the late 19th century through making bicycles.

But before and during the First World War, Coventry Eagle built up a reputation for reliability and endurance, and the 1922 2 speed proved to be one of their greatest creations.

Like nearly everyone at the Classic Car Rally, Ken doesn’t just bring his bike out for show.

He continued: “We go all over the place to race these bikes – parades as they are known – and I have just come back from France.

“These events attract thousands of and bikes and I have also done Mallory Park this year.

“Restoring bikes is my hobby and I did this all myself. I hope people see the bike and it inspires them to get involved themselves.”
