Beverley Town 4th XI Beat Newland by 5 Wickets

4ths secured their second win of the season when they beat third placed side Newland by five wickets at Norwood Park. Town were given a great start by Kes Thompson who claimed the prize wicket of Duncalf with the first ball of the game, to a good catch by Matt Novis.

Thompson once again spearheaded the Town attack and ended with an excellent 3 for 50 from his 11 overs. Fellow opening bowler Jacob McMullen (1-14) also claimed a wicket in what was his best spell of bowling for the team this year.

, in his mid-twenties but still the oldest Town bowler by almost ten years, joined the action and bowled with his usual economy to take 1 for 20 from 11 overs, slowing the run rate and helping reduce Newland from 71 for 2 to 71 for 5.

James Grainger made a welcome first senior appearance of the season and bowled with good pace and no small measure of success, taking 3 for 43 and slow bowler, and Under 17 captain, Matt Novis took 1 for 39, his figures spoilt only by one over when the visitors decided to open up. Rob Fish put in a much improved performance behind the stumps claiming three catches as Newland closed on 174 for 9.

Despite losing veteran RJ Thompson early James Broekhuizen and Rob Wicks still managed to carry the attack to the visitors, adding 51 in good time. Wicks, displaying a more aggressive approach, was out for 37 with the total on 59 but Broekhuizen went on to make 32, dealing largely in boundaries including some lovely shots, before indecision cost him his wicket at 87 for 3.

Captain Rich Simpson and Rob Fish both continued the positive approach, Fish completing his very good day with 30 runs. Sam Roe then joined his skipper to put on 37, Roe’s share a swashbuckling 16, leaving Town just 12 to win. Welburn came in to confidently thump a straight four before Simpson deservedly guided his side home with a lofted off-drive from the third delivery of the last over. His patient and well-judged 46 included two fours and two sixes.

The day was competed by a Champions League Curry Night  at the clubhouse. Town offer their grateful thanks to Craig Darley who kindly sponsored the event which was enjoyed by club members.
