Beverley Theatre Company to Present ‘Bazaar & Rummage’ in May

The Beverley Company will be staging their first production of 2011 when they perform the comedy, ‘Bazaar & Rummage’ at the in Beverley from the 18th to the 21st May.

Set in the early eighties, this comedy is the story of a group of women who have agoraphobia and have been encouraged to form a self-help group by their controlling volunteer social worker Gwenda. The story unfolds in the local hall where the ladies are holding a bazaar and rummage sale to help them raise funds, and more importantly to conquer their fears by leaving their homes for the first time in years.

As they do so, each of them begins to face up to the reality of the outside world, despite the overbearing Gwenda, who used to suffer from agoraphobia herself. Gwenda tries desperately to maintain control with the support of Fliss, a trainee social-worker, and while sorting through the rummage the ladies’ fears and anxieties are brought noisily to the fore. Calm is eventually restored however, by the ever-sensible Fliss whose own neurotic tendencies are also revealed before it becomes clear that as they pack away the unsold items at the end of the day, their agoraphobia is far from cured!

This is an entertaining, witty and poignant story, written by Sue Townsend, famed for her ‘Secret Diaries of Adrian Mole, aged 13 and three quarters’. The play is being directed for the by Maisie Reynolds and features an all female cast.

The company is still actively recruiting in preparation for their next production later in 2011, so, anyone interested in acting or production activities can send an email to: info@beverleytheatrecompany.co.uk or alternatively, call the Membership Secretary Yvonne Parkinson on 01964 544491 for an informal chat.
