Braves tame the Tigers

The match started sadly for Beverley Braves today as in form Bailey Foulston was taken off the pitch within the first few minutes with a broken collar after a strong tackle. He has been playing superbly of late and his presence will be missed. The Braves were on fire today and James McGahey expertly picked up a loose ball and the resulting long pass out wide was cleanly taken by Owen Harrison who strongly dived over the line to secure the first points of the match in difficult conditions.

The game restarted and straight from the off Beverley’s strong men in the middle Kurt Pelham, Callum Officer, Jamie Branton and Dylan Clifford were relentless in their tackling. This tired the Tigers and the numerous runs from Beverley’s forwards could not be restrained. Tom Wood took a high ball cleanly under pressure and picked up were he left off from the last match, tackling so efficiently and when the ball is passed out wide along the line he was there to catch cleanly and power over for an excellent team try.

Only a few minutes later ran from deep at amazing speed and was released by a superb pass from Kurt Pelham which saw Wardill break through the Cottingham defence and dive over the line making the score 0 – 14 after it was converted by Harrison. Beverley did not relax though and continued to pressure Cottingham, forcing errors and not allowing them to complete their sets of six. Another lovely passing move along the line, which Beverley seemed to excel at today, found its way to Gray who again forced his way over the white wash. Despite slippery conditions Beverley held the ball well and a similar passing move saw Gray complete a well deserved hat trick of tries. Harry Bulleyment came on and immediately made an impact with hard tackles and runs that saw at least six Tigers trying to stop his momentum. Callam Bielby also continued his awesome drives.  The whistle blew 0 – 22 at half time.

The second half saw the same lovely flowing passes that Beverley are starting to get a name for. These stretch the opposition every time and this one was no exception as Wardill picked up the pass to fly in the opposite direction and break through the Tigers grasps to score. Moments later another strong run saw Wardill throw a dummy to fool Cottingham opening up a path clear to the line from his own half to complete his hat trick.

James McGahey was outstanding again today with superb passing and tackles that wrapped up the Tigers attack so well.  Harvey Lazenby picked out players brilliantly with his accurate passing and ’s performance is still so consistent every week.  Cottingham, to their credit, did not give up and scored a try in the corner to get points on the board but this was answered by two more tries from Wardill. The final score was 4 – 42 Top tackler was powerhouse Jamie Branton and Man of the match deservedly to Harry Gray.
