Prevention of Heavy Vehicles Using Westwood Rd and Newbegin

For at least three years, team members of ‘Neighbour Alert’ have been monitoring and reporting on the increasing usage of Newbegin, Beverley, by heavy vehicles and their drivers, to access the town centre, and peripheral areas.  Our concern has been mainly for safety of pedestrians, as well as drivers and to avoid major congestion, which is a very regular occurrence.

Vehicles have included huge 40 ton fixed base and articulated lorries and coaches, often from mainland Europe countries, with drivers whose English language is very limited.  Regularly, residents assist drivers to reverse their vehicles all the way back to the junction with Rd, Albert Terrace and St.Mary’s Terrace.  Major vehicular congestion results at the junction and approach roads.

Signs near Walkington cross roads, or at the junction with Westwood Rd/Walkington Rd, and at Newbegin, indicating the route is unsuitable for heavy vehicles have been  ignored, misunderstood or not seen, by the drivers.

Recently, we have worked closely with Inspector Mark Coulthard, Beverley , and Dean Edwards of East Riding Council, submitting photographs and incident reports.  As a result, initially, Dean commissioned the sign featured in the attached photograph and contacted satnav programme producers, to alter their routing programmes.

Collectively, we are monitoring the effect of the new sign.  If minimal, existing and new signs already discussed with Dean Edwards will be considered for location alteration and/or implementation, bearing in mind sensitivity to the environment, to avoid sign clutter.

The ‘Neighbourhood Alert’ team members acknowledge the keen and valuable help of Inspector Coulthard and Dean Edwards in responding to our concerns, which are on behalf of not only our members and residents, but also all pedestrians and drivers using the very busy road, and narrowed pavement, of Newbegin.

  1. now wat i want to know is this…….. the council introduced the 7.5t limit a few years ago for most ofthe roads in bev. 1 of the main reasons was to prevent the mass of army lorry learners from entering the town centre areas. yet i regularly see many down norwood or near police station!! they are plated way over 7.5t cos they need to be to do the test. so why are they driving within the 7.5t limit???

  2. Eh erm…no mention of the Beverley Local Action Team that worked on this for Inspector Coulthard?
    Ah well!

  3. I’d like to make it quite clear that ‘Neighbour Alert’ team members, who represent over 50 residents in St.Mary’s Tce, Newbegin, and adjacent areas, is an ACTIVE ‘Nieghbourhood Watch’ scheme, established 7yrs ago, and have dealt with a whole range of issues, from crime prevention and reduction, to things like trying to prevent accidents in Newbegin by speed hogs to removing graffiti and dog fouling. We do it voluntarily, and not for any self-seeking publicity, but to try to enhance the quality of life in our community – as do all the 15-odd Co-ordinators in the Beverley & District Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators’ Panel, in their areas.
As mentioned in the release we issued, and which, hu17.net has kindly reported, we have been working trying to get signage to prevent heavy goods vehicles, including coaches, using Newbegin, and Westwood Road, not just for the last few months, but three years! All documented and provable. We are not in the business of contesting, we are in the business of ‘doing’, and we are happy to work with all agencies. That communications need improving is apparent and it is regretted that it would seem we are trying to seek publicity for ourselves – others might, we do so, we don’t. We have an excellent working with Inspector Mark Coulthard, and it was because of our relationship that, clearly (now) the matter was taken to the LAT and progress was made from there. We have worked with Inspector Coulthard’s predecessors on this matter, but none has matched the efficiency and urgent attention to the problem as much as him.

  4. Good for the active citizens in that area which is what Big Society is all about and shame on the others who would seek to jump on the band wagon for political gain which is SO transparent.
