Road Sweepings to be Composted

Road sweepings from some of the East Riding’s streets and roads are now being sent for composting to keep it out of landfill.

The sweepings, including leaf fall, soil and paper litter, are collected by ’s street sweeping vehicles and gully waste vehicles.

This new service has been introduced around Anlaby, Beverley, Hedon, Hessle, Kirkella, Preston and Willerby.

The vehicles will be emptied at the Wilmington depot, Hull, and then transported for mixing with other materials, such as garden waste, which is going for composting.

, head of streetscene services, said:

“This is an innovative scheme. Trials suggest it will prove successful in keeping yet more waste out of landfill, saving costs to the council and damage to the environment”.
