Your Pictures: Paul Laybourne Infra-Red Beverley

My name is and I’ve lived in for 5 years and just love photography.

I decided I wanted to photograph some of Beverley’s famous landmarks. The problem is they have all been done before, so I decided to take a different approach and capture them in Infra-red light as it gives the images a wintery, fantasy look.

It took me nearly a year to get the shot of the Blackmill on the Beverley .

Waiting for the right light and sky, I finally managed it in November 2010 just before the last of the leaves had fallen.

In order to capture Infra-red images you need to fit a filter to the front of the camera.

In my case I fitted a Hoya R72. A custom white balance then needs to be set with filter fitted. As you will see with the before and after images, the image comes out almost black and white with a hint of red.

The image then needs to be processed. I do this using Paint Shop Pro.

Basically you need to swap colour channels by swapping red with blue, and blue with red, and then desaturate the image to get the whiteness in the greenery of the image.
