Whitestar Athletic Put Seven Past Ferriby

Athletic moved into overdrive in this their opening league fixture of 2011.

A lightening start saw Whitestar pressure the goal. A close range effort from centre forward James Ayre was parried by the keeper but it was deflected over the line for a goal by a Ferriby defender. Beverley continued to play with great authority, next coming close when Matty James drifted a shot just past the post and agonisingly out of the reach of Ayre’s outstretched boot. Nevertheless the second goal was soon to arrive with the ever spritely Liam Sharpley outpacing the defence on the right wing before chipping the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Whitestar commenced a period of sustained pressure with Max Bentham ghosting past a defender only for the keeper to save his shot. Charlie Hewson, Athletic’s combative midfielder, won a 50/50 tackle and the ball broke to Sam Harman whose shot seemed destined for the top corner before eventually passing just over the bar. Michael Ward, in a “Cafu” style run, was the next to come close when his powerful shot skimmed just wide of the left hand upright. Further good combination work saw Bentham feed Ward whose precision through ball found an onrushing Ayre who finished in style for 3-0.

In the second half an intelligent cut back from Liam Sharpley landed into the path of Sam Harman who curled his shot beyond the outstretched arms of the keeper from long range to extend the Whitestar lead to four.   Liam Sharpley was again instrumental in the fifth goal as his cross shot was palmed away by the Ferriby keeper, however only as far as the goal poaching Ayre who tapped it home. If that goal was simple for Ayre his next had more than a touch of class about it. He received the ball in his own half, facing away from goal. He spun his marker before charging down on the goal holding off defenders as he went. As the goal keeper came out Ayre calmly slotted the ball home for a well-deserved hat-trick.

Beverley’s superb back line continued to soak up any North Ferriby pressure and when Josh Northern made yet another fine interception the ball fell to Charlie Hewson who laid it to Matty James whose over the top ball was latched onto by Rob Tate. Tate hared forward to the edge of the box and dispatched a shot into the corner of the net to close the game out.

Man of the Match was Michael Ward

Final Score – Under 12s  Beverley Whitestar Athletic 7  North Ferriby Greens 0
