Successful Day at Humberside Cross-Country for Beverley AC

Junior and senior runners from Beverley Athletic Club are celebrating their success at the Yorkshire and Humberside Cross-Country Championships which took place at the Northern Racing College near Doncaster last weekend.

The annual championships attract a strong field of runners from running clubs in the region and Beverley Athletic Club was represented in all age categories from under-13 juniors to senior men and women.

For the second year in succession Beverley’s men came first in the Humberside team competition.  , Rob Snaith, Matt Chadwick, James Pearson, Morgan Leskiewicz and Andy Johnson made up the team.  Mark Dalton led the B team which finished in fourth place.

The Humberside under-13 girl’s team competition was dominated by Beverley Athletic Club Juniors who took first and third places with 7 runners in the top 12.  They were led home by Jessica Chapman who finished in first place.

In the ladies team competition Beverley was narrowly beaten into fourth place by East Hull Harriers.  Only two points separated the local rivals.  Julie Donald was the first Beverley lady home (29.20) and feeling strong managed to overtake a number of runners towards the end of the race.  She was followed closely by Claire Bracken, Helen Storr and who made up the rest of the team.

Beverley’s under-15 and under-13 boy’s teams ran well against tough competition finishing in second and third place respectively.

Conditions were good on the undulating course with the ground firm after the recent icy weather.  A small water jump about half way round tested athletes with tired legs but overall the course lent itself to fast times.

These championships will be used as a basis for selection for the Inter-County teams.  A number of Beverley athletes are expected to be selected to represent Humberside at the UK CAU Cross-Country Championships which will be held in Birmingham on Saturday 5 March 2011.
